Bassin 7 — located in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city — held great potential for becoming a new mixed-use neighborhood and destination. Gehl and BIG developed a master plan in collaboration with the City and Port of Aarhus, exploring how to create a vibrant harbor front and attractive living conditions.

A multifunctional neighborhood

Hot on the heels of Copenhagen, Denmark’s second city Aarhus has undergone a broad transformation in recent decades. A flagship move for the city was the development of its previously industrial waterfront. Here, Gehl partnered with world renowned architects BIG, to deliver a master plan for the area known as Bassin 7.

The plan integrates urban strategy and design that provide a mix of conditions, combining residential, commercial, recreational and water based activities. In true Gehl fashion, the team began with a public life study to understand the existing and desired needs and behaviours expected across the site. In such a prominent location, putting public life first became the calling card for the development, and the rationale for the public space plan and the strategic positioning and design of amenities with weather conditions –  particularly wind and sunlight patterns –  in mind.

In 2018, Bassin 7 opened its harbour baths to the public, bringing people to the area and spurring its reputation as a vibrant destination. As of 2024, developments continue across the site, bringing more residents to enjoy the ‘holiday atmosphere for everyday life’.

Bassin 7 won the Aarhus Architecture Prize 2023 in the category “Urban Gaps”, Project Development Award 2023 for best urban development project and in 2024, the MIPIM Best Urban Regeneration Project.
