In 2006, after 160 years making delicious beer, the iconic Carlsberg brewery closed production at its site in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro neighborhood. This paved the way for the distinctive red brick lined streets to find a new purpose. With Gehl as a trusted advisor, so began a planned 30-year venture to transform the famous quarter into Carlsberg Byen (Carlsberg City).

Life first, then space, and finally buildings

As with many urban regeneration projects, Carlsberg City was at risk of becoming a neighborhood heavily invested in architecture and design but lacking in urban life. As urban quality consultants, Gehl’s role began by helping Carlsberg City define a public life-focused vision for the area and formulate an International Competition brief that accurately reflected Gehl’s method of prioritizing life first, then space, and finally buildings.

The competition brief called for a public space plan, a program of events, and a framework for mixed activities and functions that could be implemented early on — deliverables that are rare in standard competitions. Gehl advised on the selection of 218 competition entries and provided quality assurance for the proposals. Based on Entasis’ winning proposal, 16 temporary spaces were activated with pop-up programs as part of the early activation strategy to develop the area’s creative identity. The City of Copenhagen then sought Gehl’s advice on the development of a local area plan to ensure an open, accessible and lively future neighborhood.

As new elements emerge and are built, Gehl’s initial public life vision continues to play a guiding role for Carlsberg. In 2024, Carlsberg City is home to 8,000 residents, provides jobs for 10,000 people, and welcomes 70,000 annual visitors.
