Healthy School Food Environment Pilot

Working across silos to address Bogotá’s food deserts through public space improvements

The public realm poses a challenge to healthy food access in peripheral neighborhoods of Bogotá. Steep terrain, lack of transportation, and limited healthy food offerings make it difficult for Bogotanos to access the fresh produce needed to cook at home. The nature of the public realm forces people to rely on processed and fast food that is more accessible and heavily advertised. Credit: Gehl

In partnership with Bogotá’s Health Secretariat, Gehl piloted a school food environment intervention to improve access to healthy food for children. Building on a 2020 Foodscape Assessment, the project explored how public realm improvements can support healthier habits, reinforcing Bogotá’s commitment to tackling childhood obesity and promoting health equity.

One of the pilot’s goals was to increase access and awareness of healthy food. During an evaluation study, it was found that food activities increased by 240%, including an increase in observations of healthy food consumption. 60% of people surveyed reported that they felt inspired to introduce more healthy meals in their diets. Improvements to the public realm also impacted perceived safety in the area. Concerns about safety at the site decreased by 50%, 22% more people reported that the space was pleasant to spend time in, and 81% more people walked by the area, including 9% more women than before. Credit: Gehl

Creating a healthy neighborhood pilot with many actors

The pilot was built on an eight-month assessment and engagement process supported by Cities for Better Health, where community leaders evaluated neighborhood food environments and residents’ lived experiences. After the assessment was completed, Gehl facilitated a process to align stakeholder priorities for action. Gehl facilitated roundtables, inter-departmental workshops, and masterclasses with city agencies and experts to align priorities and uncover cross-sectoral solutions to Bogotá’s Food Rights challenges.

The San Luis Chapinero neighborhood was selected as a pilot site due to its diverse community, active health-related organizations, and Monteverde School engagement. Public life studies revealed that the bus stop and sidewalks outside the school were highly active spaces, which presented a opportunity to foster healthier routines.

Gehl led a visioning process with students, teachers, and the community board to codesign the pilot, which local partners implemented. The intervention included a wooden shelter, seating, an educational mural, and a vertical garden. The goal was to improve public space to encourage health, physical activity, and social interaction.

The pilot successfully promoted healthy eating, created a safer, more welcoming space, and increased pedestrian activity. Importantly, it also drew city and built environment agencies into a collaborative effort to address health risks and develop a shared impact framework.
