Turning strategy into action for the city centre of Konstanz

From strategy to action

Konstanz is a beautiful city on the shores of Lake Constance, with a picturesque historic centre, diverse shops, vibrant gastronomy, an attractive lake and riverfronts. The challenge was to manage high visitor pressure and commercial intensity while creating more space, comfort and quality for people to stay.

After years of strategies and concepts, there was a clear urgency to move from discussion to action. The project “Innenstadt von morgen” marks this shift, focusing on implementation.

Together with the City of Konstanz, we translated existing insights into a more concrete strategy, defining key spaces, connections and potentials more precisely. A clear roadmap structures actions across short-, medium- and long-term horizons, supported by a detailed catalogue outlining responsibilities, timelines and costs.

A central element were the “Sommerorte”, temporary summer places acting as real-life test spaces. They invited people to experience change directly and provided valuable insights through on-site engagement and Public Life studies, feeding back into the strategy.

The project also included a graphic identity and communication materials to create a recognisable presence.

We will continue this work with new temporary summer pilots, Sommerorte, planned for 2026.
