Alexanderplatz is undergoing major transformation as new developments reshape its identity and function. Commissioned by Commerz Real, this placemaking vision aims to mobilize stakeholders around a shared future for the square, shifting focus from individual buildings to the vibrant public life and connections that define one of Berlin’s most iconic urban spaces.

Our vision is a square that welcomes everyone. A square that is an integral part of a district – a vibrant metropolis. A square that reflects history and simultaneously represents a modern, global Berlin. Credit: Gehl

A vision to mobilize momentum and refocus on the space between the buildings

This project aims to develop a comprehensive placemaking concept for Alexanderplatz. It focuses on understanding current and future users and visitors, exploring their relationship and experiences with the square, and identifying the area’s key challenges and opportunities. Based on these insights, the project defines strategies, invitations, and functions that improve the lived experience and strengthen Alexanderplatz as an inclusive, vibrant, and engaging public space.

Our Vision for Alexanderplatz: Alexanderplatz will be a square that welcomes everyone, an open and inclusive space where people from all walks of life come together. It will serve as an integral part of its surrounding district and the wider city: A vibrant square that connects communities, activities, and experiences. Alexanderplatz should embody both the unique legacy and the modern, global character of Berlin. Our vision further explores which programming beyond commercial shopping and office buildings can strengthen the squares as a destination and meeting place.

The vision aims to inspire and mobilize stakeholders around the square to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) dedicated to enhancing the public realm. After decades of focusing primarily on individual plots and buildings, it is time to turn the attention to the square itself and the life between the buildings.
