From a fenced-off factory to vibrant neighborhood destination
The former cable factory in Duisburg-Wanheimerort was once a major employer but has remained largely unused since its production moved. Now fenced off and disconnected from its surroundings, the site holds immense potential as a vibrant neighborhood destination. Gehl, commissioned by ZAR Real Estate Holding, developed a vision for public life to transform the area into an accessible and vibrant urban space.
The resulting Public Life Perspective report outlines key insights and recommendations to reintegrate the site with its surroundings. By embracing its industrial heritage, the concept repurposes existing buildings and materials to create a sustainable, character-rich environment. Strengthening connections to nearby streets and public spaces is central to the vision, ensuring seamless integration into the urban fabric and ongoing initiatives like the 2027 International Garden Exhibition.
Developed alongside a collaborative workshop with renowned architecture firms JWA, UNStudio, Caspar, and CF Møller, the Public Life Perspective provides critical analyses to guide urban design decisions. It helps the teams better understand the site’s conditions and its role in shaping public life, urban spaces, and buildings — ensuring meaningful integration with existing structures. Additionally, the in-depth analysis of the Wanheimerort district makes it a valuable resource for the City of Duisburg, future partners such as the International Garden Exhibition IGA 2027, and other economic stakeholders.
