Our collaboration with Cities for Better Health, and this foodscape study starts with two simple questions: what is the relationship between the food system and the urban environment, and how might we achieve a positive dietary shift at the neighborhood level through local interventions and strategies? This report is the culmination of a seven-month collaboration with Cities for Better Health and three of their network cities — Bogota, Houston, and Philadelphia. This report focuses on Houston.
The Thriving Foodscape Approach evaluates the intersection of food, people, and the urban environment using a blend of quantitative, qualitative, and observational research methods. By leveraging different types of data, the methodology makes connections between people’s everyday food experiences, social interactions in public space, and neighborhood design, creating a more complete picture of how urban planning and design can better support healthy food behaviors in a particular place.
